TAMPA — Sixth-grader Joshua Chen has taken Junior Achievement programs since he was in kindergarten.

The 12-year-old Martinez Middle School student recently shared his experiences with business leaders as the nonprofit announced a historic $1.7 million grant to launch JA Finance Park presented by SunTrust.

Chen said he has learned about making choices, saving money and entrepreneurship in class programs, summer programs and his fifth-grade experience at Junior Achievement Biz Town.

“It gave me a taste of exciting experiences to come,” Chen said at a Feb. 11 news conference regarding the new financial literacy and career readiness center in Tampa.

The 16,000-square-foot facility, to serve middle school students, will be built near the current Junior Achievement Biz Town center, 13707 N. 22nd St.

In partnership with Hillsborough County Public Schools, JA Finance Park will serve more than 15,000 area middle school students each year.

School superintendent Jeff Eakins said at the announcement, held at the school district headquarters, that students will learn managing money, using banking services, creating budgets, purchasing products and making investments.

Pam Muma, a Junior Achievement board member for 29 years, said this is the largest donation in Junior Achievement Tampa Bay’s history. She and Hillsborough County Commissioner Sandra Murman are among a team of community leaders who will be seeking donors for a $4.6 million capital campaign for the project.

Construction is expected to begin by the end of year, but the exact location on the property, which is owned by Hillsborough County and the school district, is not finalized. Building details also are being finalized, Murman said after the presentation.
