What Others are saying about Sandy........

Murman Makes Things Happen; Storms Stands In The Way
Published: Aug 17, 2006

Without question, Sandy Murman is the Republican candidate best suited to represent east Hillsborough's District 10 in the state Senate.
Murman is a proven leader. During four terms in the House, she rose in leadership and used her influence to help the county, with a special focus on protecting children. She's tough on taxes, crime and big government. And more than her opponents, she understands the costs of sprawling development and the importance of addressing the state's transportation needs.
Murman also understands the state's health care challenges, particularly the sad state of our emergency rooms. And she promises to work to make property insurance companies more accountable.
In the Sept. 5 primary, Murman faces Hillsborough County Commissioner Ronda Storms and promising newcomer Ray Young of Plant City. The winner will face Democrat Stephen Gorham and write-in candidate Victoria Brake in the Nov. 7 general election.
Young, a fourth-generation Floridian, is a calm, confident leader who would bring a common-sense approach to government, but he lacks Murman's experience.
It should come as no surprise that we cannot endorse Storms in her campaign to replace Sen. Tom Lee in District 10.
Lee did an outstanding job representing his east Hillsborough district and was elected Senate president because he listened to people, built coalitions and focused on the issues most important to Florida's future.
Storms, by contrast, belittles her opponents and bullies people who appear before the county commission. She focuses on headline-grabbing issues like nude dancing and gay pride because solving problems like overcrowded schools requires tough choices. Unable to grasp the city's vital role in the county's economic health, she has made her name by criticizing anything to do with Tampa.
Building a better community for all is not her agenda.
People in Storms' district face clogged roads partly because, in several large areas, she fought to ensure that developers wouldn't have to pay impact fees for the roads, schools and water their new subdivisions would require.
She also fought a comprehensive approach to Hillsborough's traffic needs supported by a prominent committee of county citizens, then sat back while the county returned millions of dollars meant for transit planning to the federal government.
Her approach to solving transportation issues is to relentlessly rant against the city's trolley and bus system. And while she claims to be a fiscal conservative, Storms voted to give county employees a 7 percent pay raise for six years in a row.
Of all the current commissioners, Storms is most to blame for holding back Hillsborough because of her talent for cowing colleagues, who roll their eyes before they roll over and vote with her. Her approach is applauded by some, but her temperament won't play well in Tallahassee, where hard work, collegiality and self-discipline are valued.
If Republican voters in eastern Hillsborough want a senator who will get things done, Murman is by far the superior candidate.
In the Republican primary for Senate District 10, the Tribune endorses Sandy Murman.

Well, I am not reluctant to tell anyone who I am voting for. Sandra Murman is clearly the only choice. She knows how to get things done up here in Tallahassee and has a record to prove it. While others are grandstanding for headlines, Sandy is working hard for the people she represents. Her style of leadership is to bring people together to reach a workable consensus, not to tear them into factions in a political style that may grab headlines, but is not publicly productive. I was proud to serve in the Florida Legislature with Sandy and the voters of Hillsborough County would be mighty fortunate to once again have her leadership in Tallahassee. The Florida Senate clearly needs the voice and leadership skills of Sandra Murman.

Florida Right to Life commends Sandra Murman and her efforts on behalf of those whose voices cannot be heard. We applaud State Representative Murman for her outstanding contribution in defense of the sanctity of human life. Her efforts began in 1999 when she first sponsored legislation known as the “Parental Notification of Abortion”. We were thankful for this legislation to protect our minor daughters and to give parents the right to be notified before an abortion takes place.
She continued to spend much of her time in subsequent legislative sessions making sure this critical legislation stayed in the forefront. In 2003 she proposed the parental rights initiative in the creation of s.26, Art.1 of the State Constitution, which provide certain rights of parents with respect to their children. And then in 2004 proposed a parental rights amendment to the Constitution that must be approved by the voters. Florida is blessed with an extraordinary legislator who does extraordinary things for all the people of our state.

“As a long time advocate of firefighters and their issues, it is with great pleasure that the Pasco County Council of Fire Fighters endorse your run for Florida State Senate. District 10 will e well represented if you are elected. The firefighters of Pasco County are in your debt for all that you have done in the State House of Representatives and we look forward to working with you in the State Senate.”

Shawn Baptist
Pasco County Council President

“After meeting with you and after careful review of your qualifications and track record regarding your law enforcement commitment, The Fraternal Order of Police, District Three Lodges, Inc. has unanimously endorsed your candidacy for the Florida Senate, district 10.”

Gene Leonard
Director, Fraternal Order of Police

“Sandy and I were a formidable team in the State House.  We both understood what it meant to be an effective legislator: go to bat for your district, build consensus, then pass meaningful bills that make a difference in people’s lives.  There’s no doubt in my mind – Sandy will be a champion for District 10 and a leader in the Senate.  I can’t wait to welcome her.”

State Senator Paula Dockery

“East Pasco can count on Sandy Murman in the Senate. I worked side-by-side with her on some complicated local issues, and I can tell you from first-hand experience she is tenacious when it comes to her constituents. She understands our concerns and more than that, she’ll fight for them.”

State Representative Ken Littlefield

“She’s a workhorse, not a publicity hound. That’s why Sandy always ranked in the top (among House members) n effectiveness and why she was able to pass so many new laws during the time we served together. In many ways she was a model legislator, concerned only about getting the job done. I want her in the Senate because I know, as one of only 40 members, she’ll have an immediate, positive impact on our area of Florida.”

State Representative Dennis Ross

“We have some pressing issues to be resolved in Tallahassee- growth management, the cost of property insurance, school standards and accountability- and they can’t wait for a Senator who isn’t up to speed. That’s why Sandy Murman is the right choice for Republicans in District 10. She has a proven track record of passing reforms that were consistent with our values and principles. I’m proud to support her in this race.”

State Representative Ron Reagan
