Community Involvement

“…no local candidate this year can match the time Murman has spent over the past two decades serving a range of civic organizations.” – St Petersburg Times – 7/29/2010

Glazer Children’s Museum, Chair

Growing up in Indianapolis, home of the world’s largest children’s museum, Sandy was inspired to bring the joy of a children’s museum to the Tampa area. A feasibility study was completed in the 1990’s with positive results that a museum would be successful. The project stayed mostly dormant until Sandy completed her legislative work, but progressed rapidly upon her return in 2004 as chair of the capital campaign and most recently of the board of directors in 2008.

The group raised $15.5 million for the capital campaign, $13 million of which was private funding and just a minimal $3 million coming from the local Community Investment Tax (CIT). The museum is set to open later this year along Ashley Drive on land donated by the City of Tampa. (www.glazermuseum.org)

LLT Charter School, founding director

Sandy served as a founding director of the Leadership, Literacy & Technology (LLT) Academy, a charter middle school located in the Progress Village area of Tampa. The Academy with a growing campus, diverse student body, dedicated staff and talented direction measures success one student at a time. The school is funded and operated by the Hillsborough County School District.

Dream Givers, founding board member, still serving

Sandy helped found Dream Givers in 2006, a private foundation managed under USF Women in Leadership & Philanthropy (WLP), where she still serves on the board. Dream Givers provides up to two scholarships annual of up to $5,000 per year to a USF student with preference given to non-traditional women who are single parents and otherwise meet the established eligibility requirements.

Brandon Chamber of Commerce, Past Chair

Long time member of the Brandon Chamber, Sandy served on the capital campaign committee and helped the organization secure $2.5 million in private funding for a new chamber office building completed in 2004. The chamber was given a 5 star rating from the US Chamber in 2006, Sandy served as chair in 2007 and the following year the organization was designated Chamber of the year.
